We do not think twice to accept the blessings in our life as if they are from God, but at the first sign of trouble we are ready to curse God and die. We ask God, “Why, have you allowed this to happen to me?” The real question is why do you need to ask God why? If He was to pour out blessings on you would not ask why. We would simply accept it for what it was. We would just say, “Well if God wants to bless me, who am I to stop Him?”

Jesus had to experience this first hand. As He prayed in the garden of Gethsemane He said, “Abba, Father, all things are possible unto thee; take away this cup from me: nevertheless not what I will, but what thou wilt.” (Mark 14:36) Jesus literally said to His heavenly Father, “I know all things are possible but I realize that it may not be permissible. Whatever your will is for my life, I will do it.” To accept what happens in your life, good and bad, pretty and ugly, requires you to surrender your will to His will.

Who better can you have in your corner than God Himself? Jesus acknowledged first that Satan desired to cause Peter to fail. Right on the heels of that Jesus says but I am praying for you! Even if there is no one else in your corner, the only person you need in your corner is Jesus.

It is often in the dead of winter that we look around us and see the bareness of our lives. It is easy to start assuming the worst. We begin to make decisions based on the negative reports that we are seeing. What we do not see is that below the surface, below all the negative signs of death, that life is blooming and growing.

What is the appeal to Christianity then? If we have to suffer and go through fiery trials, then why even be a Christian? For beginners, we know that even though we face fiery trials we never face them alone. God is always with us. He is an ever-present help in a time of trouble. That does not mean it hurts less or it is any easier. It just means we are not walking this way alone.
